Personal notes/observations:
I've seen the show many times over the several years that I've been a fan. Despite this fact, a performance of "1964" ... The Tribute is fresh and fun each and every time.
Far from making me want to avoid Beatles music, the band has given me an appreciation for songs that I could've previously done without. For example, seeing them perform Paperback Writer has made me enjoy the tune for it's killer bass line and excellently harmonized vocals. The song is included here and I actually turn it up. Previously, I might've skipped over it or just mentally tuned it out.
If I Needed Someone has always been one that I felt never got enough attention or radio play. When it was added to the live set, I was happy as a clam, and am even more pleased that it's included on this disc. It's probably my favorite of all the tracks.
Mark's vocals on This Boy make it a must for this collection. The crowd's response at every show is a testament to the fact that it truly belongs. Gary's nod to the catch in Paul's voice on If I Fell should give true Beatles fans everywhere a smile upon the first listen and upon each one to follow. I Should've Known Better has never failed to make me sing, even when I don't realize that I'm listening.
All in all, the set list was perfect for the tracks which were to be laid down for this project. This is also the last, published recording of the line-up which included former members Jimmy Pou as George and Greg George as Ringo along with founding members Mark Benson as John and Gary Grimes as Paul.
I was there the evening that this was recorded, so the CD carries additional significance for me. Still, I don't think I'm being too very sentimental, and believe that any fan of The Beatles or of "1964" ... The Tribute would be thrilled to have this in their collection.
